Blue vervain (Verbena hastata) is a native perennial wildflower prized for its tall, upright form and candelabra-like spikes packed with tiny blue-purple blooms. You can use it to add vertical accent and long-season color in rain gardens, pond edges, moist meadows, and naturalized plantings where soils stay evenly moist. Pollinators quickly find the flowers, and later in the season the seed heads can offer food for songbirds.

Plant it in full sun for the sturdiest stems and best flowering, though it also performs well in partial shade. Give it average to wet soil; it tolerates periodic wetness and is a good choice for low areas that collect water. Once established it forms clumps and may slowly spread by rhizomes while also self-seeding, which can be welcome in informal plantings. If you prefer a tidier look, clip spent flower spikes before seeds mature.

At maturity it stands about 24-60 inches tall and spreads roughly 12-36 inches, so allow room for airflow and for companion plants around the base. In richer soil and more shade, stems can lean; a light pinch early in the season can encourage branching and a bushier habit, and discreet staking keeps flower spikes upright in windy sites. Cut stems back after flowering or leave some seed heads for winter interest and wildlife value. Divide clumps in spring as needed to refresh growth and manage spread. Combine with other moisture-loving natives that bloom before and after it for continuous seasonal interest.
