Why do we love Variegata? You just cannot beat the contrasting colors the antique-cream and olive green variegated foliage offers. From a distance, it can almost appear a silvery-white, and up close, you can't help but think of mint ice cream striped with plain vanilla.

The scads of profuse lilac-lavender blossoms appearing in early fall (around 2 weeks later than other Liriopes) will remind you of grape hyacinths. With his ability to grow well around trees and shrubs, and once established, tolerance of drier conditions, Variegata is virtually maintenance-free and absolutely indispensible in garden landscapes.

Of course, the handsome, moderately fast growing, clump-forming evergreen steals our hearts for its arching foliage that explodes from the ground in graceful blades and then bends slightly from the top, bowing to passersby.

As a border, edging, complete ground cover or accent, you will find Variegata never disappoints. Many gardeners opt to use Variegata as a specimen planting around garden ornaments. If you have never tried Liropes, Variegata is the perfect place to start.

Things to Note
Note: the gallon plants are shipped de-potted and with most of the soil shaken off.

If planting in zone 5, be sure to check with your local extension to confirm winter hardiness in your area.

Gardener Tips
Try mixing clusters of Veronica Georgia Blue and Siberian Iris Caesar's Brother with Variegata for a perfect purple blooming garden.

General information about Liriope muscari (Lily Turf):
With slim spears of foliage, Liriope muscari is not only a lush perennial, it is often a gardener’s best solution. Perfect for banks, beds and at the base of trees where roots will not permit grass to grow, Liriope muscari proves virtually indestructible in stubborn areas.

They tolerate drought, heat, humidity, slopes and moist areas and deer tend to avoid them. Outstanding for erosion control and choking out weeds, Liriopes also gracefully fill those shady, dry spots where nothing else grows.

Liriopes are the perfect living border, creating stately outlines for formal gardens, and in southern gardens, when other plants wilt, they thrive. Of course Liriopes are famous as low-maintenance turf substitutes, and with the exception of Big Blue and Liriope spicata (both are creepers), they stay in clumps.

We’ve narrowed down the selections for you to what we feel are some of the top varieties offering a range of color, size and superior hardiness. Be warned, once you start perusing, you’ll find yourself wanting more than one variety. They’re just that beautiful!

Important note about bare root Liriope
Liriope is not like other perennials, it grows much slower the first year when transplanted from bare roots than from potted plants. Do not expect much growth the first season after transplanting bare roots. If you seek substantial growth the first summer after transplanting, buy potted plants.

Why all the confusion about the common names?
In 1763, the French botanist Michael Adanson described a plant (probably Liriope) that he called Mondo, which remains a common name today.

A few years later, Carl Peter Thunberg described a plant, which he named Convallaria japonica. This species is now known as Ophiopogon japonicus.

A decade later, Portugese botanist Joao de Loureiro described and named the plant we now know as Liriope muscari. Nearly 100 years later Joseph Decaisne described the same species as Ophiopogon muscari.

Over time there have been numerous discussions regarding these plants and the proper botanical names for them. Today, both Liriope and Ophiopogon are treated as distinct genera. In addition to sharing the name Mondo, the plants are also interchangably called Lilyturf and Monkey Grass.

I rely now on classy ground cover to sell me great plants, well packaged and speedily delivered. Recommend

Starting a garden from scratch you can’t go far wrong with these ground cover plants to mark out a border. They were well packaged and appear to have taken well after immediate planting through membrane and cedar mulch.

Received plants in a timely way. Planted them same day. A several were extremely root bound. Time will tell if they thrive. This is why I gave a four star.

My Liriope muscari 'Variegata arrived super quick and the plants were fat and healthy. Excellent root system and only a bit pot bound -- not strange since it is fall. Very pleased and have already placed a new order for ferns. A pleasure to deal with!

This fall I ordered 50 small variegated liriope plants from classy groundcovers. They arrived quicker than expected and we're packed very well. I got them in the ground immediately and they are doing incredibly well. I won't hesitate otter from classy groundcovers again.
