If you are looking for magnificent contrasting colors, Burgundy Glow is the perfect variegated Ajuga for you. The foliage on Burgundy Glow ranges from mint-green, to ivory, to a burgundy/salmon shade and the 6-inch flower spikes that shoot up from mid-spring to early summer are a rich indigo blue beckoning butterflies to dine in your garden.

While Burgundy Glow thrives in a well-drained, full shade location, you'll note she can be flexible: tolerating full sun and even light foot traffic as well. If you have an area under trees that needs a hardy plant, this is the perfect choice. Of course you might fall in love with the ever-evolving foliage colors and opt to replace an entire turf yard with this creeper. Should you do so, you'll be rewarded in early spring with new growth in shades of white, green, pink and even rose hues. As the season wears on, she'll often shift to lots of greens and whites or roses and greens. The real clincher is when autumn dawns and most yards die, her leaves turn a lovely shimmering bronze and remain semi-evergreen throughout the winter. You will be the envy of all your neighbors with a constant display of color. Because she is frost hardy, spreads so quickly, and doesn't pose any real threat to larger perennials, many people find they enjoy experimenting with Burgundy Glow in borders, under shrubs, as an edging or in other areas where they wish to have a prolific ground cover.

Remember if you seek that rich burgundy hue from Burgundy Glow's foliage, you'll want to plant her in a sunny location; otherwise she will become greener in color.

General information about Ajuga (Bugleweed):
Ajuga reptans (commonly called Bugleweed) is noted for her striking range of foliage, colors, and textures. In mass plantings, the blanket of blue flowers is simply stunning. Because of her attractive tri-color foliage and spikes of blue flowers in spring, she is a frequent choice for planting under roses. Superb at choking out weeds, Ajuga creates a mat of semi-evergreen to evergreen, foliage that remains attractive all year round. She is also sought out because it is one of the few groundcovers that will grow under walnut trees. Growing Ajuga under trees offers gardeners who prefer not to mow under them because of the danger of large root systems a lovely solution to covering their ground. Because Ajuga will grow in shady areas, she is a terrific option for spots where grasses often fail to thrive. This makes her a perfect choice to replace turf grass, and even for growth on banks, slopes, and under shrubs. This is a plant most gardeners won’t do without.

Things to Note
The foliage color will be less vibrant in areas with no direct sunlight. For example, the Black Scallop and Bronze Beauty will be greener and the Burgundy Glow will have less burgundy.

Be aware that variegated cultivars such as Black Scallop are hybridized or sports and occasionally she will revert. Watch out for any emerging green shoots. Immediately weed any such shoots out since they are much more vigorous than the variegated plant and will take over the clump.

Speaking of foliage, keep in mind that the more direct sun Ajuga receives the more depth of color her foliage maintains. Plants such as Black Scallop or Bronze Beauty will become more green and Burgundy Glow will be less burgundy with less sunlight.

Interesting Fact
The leaves and young shoots of Ajuga cultivars are edible (but a bit bitter) and add contrasting color to salads.

Product reviewed: Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' {flat of 18 Pots - 4 in.}

I bought 3 flats. All 72 plants were in perfect condition and are thriving after being in the ground for 2 weeks. All of my plants arrived within 3 days of being shipped. What a great company, thank you so much:)

Probably the best success of the 4 items I purchased. They have thrived and multiplied, filling in more than half the space in which they were set after 4 months.

They have been planted under a maple tree, and are looking good! The plants are so large, especially compared to the spindly ones at area nurseries. The size they come would usually take at least a season to accomplish.

I first ordered 24 plants and as soon as they arrived ordered another 24. Both sets have been planted and are doing awesome. Every single plant was healthy and in great shape. Could not have been more thrilled. Have marked this business as a favorite,... Read full review >
