Smooth aster (Aster laeve) is a dependable late-season perennial that brings a cloud of blue-purple, daisy-like flowers when many gardens are winding down. You can count on it for reliable fall color and for the steady stream of pollinators it draws in during bloom.
Plant it where it will get full sun to part shade. In brighter sites it flowers most heavily, while a little afternoon shade can help in hot summers. Once established it handles dry spells well, especially in soils that drain reasonably well, making it a good fit for low-input plantings and meadow-style gardens.
At maturity, Smooth Aster typically reaches about 24-48 inches tall and forms an upright, clumping plant that can broaden over time. The smooth, often slightly glaucous foliage stays neat through the growing season, and the flower heads open from late summer into fall for a long finish to the year.
Use Smooth Aster in mixed borders, pollinator plantings, or naturalized areas. Leave some stems to set seed for birds, then cut back in late winter or early spring. If plants get tall or floppy, you can pinch or lightly shear in early summer to encourage a fuller shape.
