Plant Dianthus × 'Kahori®' (often sold as pinks) where you can enjoy its spicy fragrance up close. You get masses of hot-pink, fringed flowers carried above a compact, mounded clump of narrow, blue-green foliage. In mild climates the foliage can look attractive for long stretches of the year, giving you color even when the plant is not in full bloom.
For best flowering, give your plant full sun, especially in cooler climates. It will also handle part shade or light shade, but bloom production is usually heavier with more direct light. Choose a spot with excellent drainage; raised beds, rock gardens, and well-drained borders are great fits for this dianthus.
At maturity, expect a petite plant that stays roughly 4-20 inches tall, making it easy to tuck at the front of beds, along walkways, or into containers. Deadheading spent blooms can help keep it looking neat, and a light trim after a flush of flowers can encourage more tidy growth.
Water regularly during establishment, then let the soil dry slightly between waterings. Avoid persistently wet soil, especially in winter, and give the crown room to breathe by keeping heavy mulch off the base. Pair it with other sun-loving perennials and low growers to create a colorful, fragrant edging.
