Epimedium versicolor 'Sulphureum' (barrenwort 'Sulphureum') is a dependable, shade-tough perennial for garden edges, woodland beds, and planting beneath trees. It forms a neat clump that slowly expands by rhizomes, creating a refined, low carpet without needing constant attention.
In spring, airy sprays of pale-to-bright yellow flowers rise just above the foliage, bringing early color to shady spaces. New leaves often emerge with reddish tones, mature to green through summer, and can color again with red or burgundy notes as seasons change, adding long-lasting interest beyond the bloom.
Give it part shade to full shade and well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Once established, it handles dry shade better than many perennials, making it useful where roots and low moisture challenge other plants. Space plants so clumps can broaden, then let them knit together over time.
For best display, shear or cut back the older foliage in late winter before flowering. Maintenance is minimal after that, and the plant is noted for tolerance to deer and rabbits, along with drought and heavy shade, making it a strong choice for low-fuss shade planting.
