Red Barrenwort 'Galadriel' (Epimedium × rubrum 'Galadriel') brings a refined, woodland look to your shade garden. In spring, airy red-and-white flowers rise on wiry stems just above the foliage for a delicate, floating effect. New leaves often emerge with bronze to red tones before maturing to green, adding seasonal color even when the plant is not in bloom.
Plant it in part shade to shade, where it appreciates humus-rich, well-drained soil and consistent moisture during establishment. Once settled, it performs well as a neat, clumping perennial at the front of borders, along paths, or tucked beneath shrubs and open-branched trees. Mature plants typically reach about 8-12 inches tall with a modest spread, staying compact and easy to place in small spaces.
For the best spring display, remove or shear away tired foliage in late winter to early spring before new growth pushes. Keep the crown slightly above soggy soil, mulch lightly to protect roots, and water during prolonged dry spells. Divide in early spring or after flowering if you want to increase your planting or refresh older clumps.
