Mountain Laurel 'Firecracker' (Kalmia latifolia 'Firecracker') is a compact selection of the native evergreen shrub prized for its intricate, cup-shaped blooms and glossy, leathery foliage. In late spring to early summer, you get clustered flowers in shades of pink to white, often highlighted with red to purple-red markings inside each bloom, giving the plant a dramatic, patterned look.
For best performance, place it where you can give it cool roots and consistently moist, well-drained, acidic soil. You can grow it in full sun, partial shade, or even deeper shade, but it typically looks and flowers best with morning sun and afternoon shade. Mulch helps hold moisture and keep the shallow root zone cool; avoid heavy, wet clay and poorly drained sites that can stress the plant.
At maturity, this cultivar stays relatively low at about 30-36 inches tall with an estimated 18-24 inches of spread, making it useful as a small foundation accent, woodland-edge shrub, or evergreen focal point in a mixed border. Prune lightly just after flowering if you need to shape it, since next year's buds form on older wood. Because all parts are poisonous if eaten, site it where children and pets are unlikely to sample the foliage.
