With Mountain Laurel 'Snowdrift' (Kalmia latifolia 'Snowdrift'), you get a classic broadleaf evergreen shrub with luminous clusters of white, cup-shaped spring flowers held above glossy, leathery foliage. At maturity it forms a rounded, dense plant about 5-6 feet tall, making it useful as a foundation accent, small screen, or a feature in woodland-style plantings.
Give your plant a cool, moist, acidic, humus-rich, well-drained site for best growth. Part shade is ideal, especially where you can provide morning sun with early to mid-afternoon shade. It can tolerate a wider range of light, but avoid hot, drying exposures unless you can keep the root zone evenly moist. Mulch helps retain moisture and keeps roots cooler, and good drainage is essential (raised planting can help where soils are heavier).
Prune lightly right after flowering if you need shaping, and remove spent flower clusters to keep the plant tidy. Because all parts of mountain laurel are poisonous if ingested, place it where children and pets are less likely to sample leaves or flowers. Once established, it pairs well with other acid-loving shrubs such as azaleas and rhododendrons in mixed borders and woodland edges.
