Coastal Doghobble 'Lucky Leu®' (Leucothoe axillaris 'Lucky Leu®') is an evergreen shrub valued for its fresh peach-orange new growth that matures to glossy green foliage and for its small, bell-shaped white flowers in spring.
Plant it where you can enjoy the foliage color up close: along a shaded walkway, at the edge of a woodland bed, or in mixed shrub borders. At maturity it forms a dense, mounded plant about 36-60 inches tall with a similar spread, so it can be used as a low screen or foundation accent without constant pruning.
For best performance, give it humus-rich, acidic soil that stays evenly moist but drains well. It tolerates sun, but in brighter locations you will get the best leaf quality when the root zone is kept cool and consistently watered; in many gardens it is happiest in part shade to shade.
As a Southeastern U.S. native, it fits naturally into rain-garden edges, riparian plantings, and sloped sites where its arching stems help cover the ground. The fragrant spring flowers support pollinators, and the plant is noted for strong deer resistance in the landscape.
