Magnolia stellata 'Royal Star' is a compact, deciduous magnolia grown for its early-spring show of fragrant, star-shaped white flowers that often open before the leaves. At maturity it typically reaches about 12-20 ft tall, forming a rounded small tree or large shrub that fits well in foundation beds, borders, and as a specimen near patios or windows where you can enjoy the fragrance.
Place it in full sun to partial shade. In colder areas, a spot with morning sun and some shelter from harsh wind can help protect the flower buds from late freezes. Plant in organically rich, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist; it also appreciates mulch to keep roots cool and to reduce moisture swings.
Water deeply during establishment and during dry spells once established, especially in summer heat. Avoid letting the root zone dry out completely, but do not leave it in standing water. Prune only as needed, and do it right after flowering so you do not remove next year's buds. Keep pruning light to maintain its naturally rounded habit.
As flowers fade, the foliage provides a neat green canopy for the rest of the season. In fall, cone-like fruits may form and can add interest while also offering seed for wildlife. Pair it with spring bulbs, low perennials, or shade-tolerant groundcovers that will not compete heavily with its shallow roots.
