Physocarpus opulifolius 'Chroma Chameleon™' is a deciduous ninebark selected for season-long color and easy garden performance. You will see fresh foliage emerge and then shift through changing tones as the season progresses, followed by clusters of spring to early-summer flowers. Mature size is substantial, reaching roughly 72-96 inches tall with a broad, shrub-forming habit.
Plant it where you can enjoy both the foliage and the naturally peeling bark. Give it full sun for strongest growth and best color, though it also performs well in part shade, especially where summers are hot. You will get the best results in well-drained soil, but this shrub is adaptable and will tolerate a range of garden conditions once established.
Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots settle in. After that, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods is usually enough. Mulch to moderate soil temperature and reduce drying, keeping mulch a few inches back from the stems. If needed, prune right after flowering; remove a few of the oldest stems at the base to encourage fresh canes and keep the plant vigorous.
Use it as a bold specimen, in mixed shrub borders, or as a colorful screen. As a North American native species, ninebark can also contribute to habitat value in landscapes where you want ornamental interest paired with a tough, reliable shrub.
