Plan for a mature size around 60-72 inches tall with a similar 60-72 inch spread, and give it room to show off as a specimen or in a mixed shrub border. It’s also an excellent choice for a native-style planting where you want strong foliage color without fuss.

For best color and flowering, place it in full sun, though it also performs in part shade (expect a bit less intensity in leaf color with more shade). Plant in average to moist, well-drained soil; once established, it tolerates some drought, making it a reliable choice in many landscapes. Water regularly the first growing season to help roots establish, then adjust based on rainfall and site conditions.

Prune only as needed: remove broken or crossing stems anytime, and do any shaping or size reduction right after flowering so you don’t remove next year’s buds. Every few years, you can rejuvenate the plant by thinning out a few of the oldest stems at the base to encourage fresh, vigorous growth.
