Ninebark 'Tiny Wine®' (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Tiny Wine®') gives you bold, season-long foliage color in a compact, easy-to-place shrub. New growth emerges deep purple and stays richly colored through the growing season, followed by clusters of soft pink-to-white flowers in late spring. As stems mature, the peeling, layered bark adds extra texture and winter interest.
Plan on a mature size around 36-48 inches tall, with a broad, mounded outline. It performs best in full sun for the strongest leaf color, but it also grows well in part shade, especially in hotter climates. Use it as a foundation accent, a low hedge, or in mixed borders where its dark foliage can contrast with gold, silver, or chartreuse companions.
This ninebark tolerates a wide range of soils once established, including heavier ground with good drainage. Water regularly the first season to help roots settle in, then provide occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. A light spring feeding is optional; too much fertilizer can encourage lanky growth at the expense of color and flowering.
Because it is based on a North American native species, it fits nicely into native-inspired plantings. The blooms support pollinators, and the late-season seed capsules can add interest for birds. Minimal pruning is needed; if you want to shape it, remove a few older stems after flowering to keep the plant full and fresh.
