Pinus strobus 'Soft Touch' is a dwarf selection of eastern white pine that forms a dense, rounded to slightly mounded evergreen, prized for its soft needles and tidy structure. You can use it as a small foundation conifer, a focal point in mixed borders, or a reliable evergreen anchor in rock gardens and contemporary plantings.
Plant it in full sun for the most compact growth, though it will also perform in part shade where it may grow a bit more openly. Choose a site with good drainage and room for its mature spread. Water deeply after planting and keep the root zone evenly moist through the first season so it can establish a strong, resilient root system.
Once established, this pine is generally low maintenance. You will rarely need pruning; if you want to refine the shape, lightly trim new growth in late spring. Mulch with a thin layer of organic material to help conserve soil moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch pulled back from the trunk to avoid excess moisture against the bark.
As with many conifers, consistent drainage is important. In heavier soils, consider improving drainage or planting slightly high. With its soft texture and compact habit, Pinus strobus 'Soft Touch' adds year-round color and structure without demanding constant attention.
