Grow Solidago odora (Anise-Scented Goldenrod) for late-season color, fragrance, and pollinator activity with very little fuss. You will notice the aromatic foliage right away: the narrow, dark green leaves release a sweet anise scent when brushed or crushed, making this plant a standout even before it blooms.
In late summer into early fall, branching plumes of small, golden-yellow flowers rise above the clump, bringing a soft, airy look that pairs well with grasses and other meadow-style perennials. The blooms are a magnet for butterflies and other beneficial insects, and the upright stems create an easy, natural rhythm in mixed borders.
Place it where it can soak up plenty of light. Full sun produces the most compact growth and heaviest flowering, but it also performs well in part shade, especially in hotter climates. Give it well-drained soil; it is notably tolerant of dry conditions once established and can handle lean, sandy ground better than many ornamentals.
For best results, water regularly during the first growing season to help roots settle in, then let the plant show its drought tolerance. Cut stems back in late winter or early spring to make room for fresh growth. If a clump enlarges over time, you can divide it to share or to keep the planting neat. Mature size is typically 24-48 inches tall and about 12-24 inches wide.
