Double Play Doozie spirea (Spiraea × 'Double Play Doozie') gives you season-long color with very little fuss. In early spring, new growth emerges deep red, then matures to green while fresh tips keep the plant colorful. By late spring it begins flowering with bright purple-red clusters, and it can rebloom through the season after a light trim.
Place it where it will get at least 6 hours of sun for the strongest flowering, though it will still perform with part-day sun. Plant in average garden soil with good drainage; it adapts well to a range of soils, including clay. Water regularly the first season to establish roots, then water during extended dry spells. A layer of mulch helps conserve moisture and moderates soil temperature.
Expect a tidy, mounded shrub about 24-36 inches tall with a similar spread. Use it to edge a walk, mass in front of taller shrubs, or repeat it for a low hedge. After the first flush of bloom, shear lightly to remove spent flowers and encourage fresh red foliage and more buds. Every couple of years, remove a few of the oldest stems at the base to keep the plant vigorous. Because it is sterile, it does not set seed. Deer typically pass it by, making it a good choice for many landscapes.
