Plant it where it will get part shade to full shade, especially afternoon shade in warmer areas. You will get the best color and most consistent growth in humus-rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Work compost into the planting area and keep a light mulch layer to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. Water regularly during establishment; after that, aim for steady moisture and avoid waterlogged winter soils.

At maturity, expect a low clump about 8-10 inches tall with a spread around 16-18 inches, making it a great choice for edging, tucking along a path, or massing beneath open-canopy trees. Deer tend to leave it alone, which helps it hold its form in mixed shade plantings. In early spring, you can tidy by removing old leaves before new growth emerges. Divide clumps every few years if you want to rejuvenate plants or expand a drift.
