Weigela florida 'Midnight Sun®' (Weigela 'Midnight Sun®') is a petite, mounded weigela grown as much for foliage as for flowers. In spring it produces clusters of pink, tubular blooms that bring pollinators in, then the leaves keep the color show going through summer and into fall with tones that can read orange-red to deeper burgundy as the season progresses.
Plant it where you can enjoy the foliage up close: along the front of a mixed border, as a low foundation accent, or grouped as a tidy edging shrub. It stays compact at about 12-18 inches tall and 12-18 inches wide, making it easy to tuck into smaller spaces and containers without constant shearing.
For best flowering and strongest foliage color, give it full sun, though light shade is tolerated (especially in warmer areas). Provide average moisture while it establishes, then keep the soil from swinging to extremes of drought or sogginess. A 2-3 inch mulch layer helps even out moisture and temperature around the roots; keep mulch a few inches back from the stems.
Pruning is simple: if you need to shape it, prune right after the main spring bloom so you do not remove next season's flower buds. You can also remove a few older interior stems periodically to keep the plant dense and refreshed. Hardy in USDA zones 4-8.
