Plant in well-drained soil and water consistently during the first growing season to help roots establish. After that, water when the top few inches of soil dry out, especially during extended heat or drought. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch helps keep soil moisture even and reduces temperature swings; keep mulch pulled back from the stems.
