Panicum virgatum Dream Catcher 'Lightning Bolt', commonly sold as Switchgrass 'Lightning Bolt', is a tall native switchgrass with a strongly upright, architectural habit. Mid-green foliage forms a sturdy column, and silvery plumes rise from midsummer into fall. At about 66 to 78 inches tall and 36 to 48 inches wide, it gives you height, motion, and screening value without the permanence of a shrub.

Use this selection as a specimen, vertical accent, loose hedge, or back-of-border grass where you want structure that holds through rain and wind. The plumes soften the outline while the narrow foliage keeps the plant clean and upright. It pairs beautifully with late-season perennials, prairie flowers, shrubs, and broad-leaved plants that benefit from a tall grass backdrop and winter texture.

Plant Panicum virgatum Dream Catcher 'Lightning Bolt' in full sun for the strongest habit, with bright part shade acceptable where the site remains open. Average to moist, well-drained soil is ideal, though established switchgrass is noted for drought tolerance, deer resistance, and adaptability. Water consistently during establishment, then rely on the deep root system to carry the clump through ordinary dry spells.

Let the stems stand after frost if you enjoy their winter presence and the cover they provide for small birds, then cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizer, which can reduce the upright form. With its tall frame, silver bloom texture, and tough native background, this cultivar is a strong choice for sunny borders, meadow plantings, and informal screens.
