Panicum virgatum Dream Catcher 'Lion's Mane', commonly sold as Switchgrass 'Lion's Mane', is a compact native switchgrass named for its rounded habit and glowing golden flower sprays. Bright green foliage forms a dense mound, then late-season bloom creates a halo of texture above the clump. At about 30 inches tall with an estimated 30 to 36 inch spread, it brings prairie character to smaller sunny spaces.

Use this grass as a low specimen, massed accent, front-to-mid border texture, or container-scale feature where movement and rounded form matter. The golden sprays look especially effective when backlit, and the bright foliage keeps the plant fresh before bloom. It pairs well with coneflowers, rudbeckias, asters, liatris, alliums, sedums, and other sun perennials that benefit from a compact grass companion.

Plant Panicum virgatum Dream Catcher 'Lion's Mane' in full sun and average, well-drained soil. As a switchgrass selection, it brings deep-rooted durability, drought tolerance after establishment, deer resistance, and value for naturalistic plantings. Water during the first season to help the root system develop, then keep irrigation moderate. Rich fertilizer is usually unnecessary and may reduce the tidy habit.

Leave the dried stems and seed texture standing into winter for movement and small-wildlife cover, then cut the clump back in late winter or early spring. Its modest height makes cleanup quick and lets you tuck it into spaces that are too small for taller switchgrass cultivars. With rounded form, bright foliage, and golden late-season bloom, this selection adds a cheerful, durable note to sunny plantings.
