Helleborus Winter Sparkle 'Red', commonly sold as Lenten Rose 'Red', brings deep winter and early spring color to shaded gardens when little else is flowering. Leathery evergreen foliage forms a handsome clump about 12 to 18 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, creating a polished backdrop for nodding red blooms. The flowers open low and elegant above the leaves, giving you a refined woodland look that bridges the quiet season and the first weeks of spring.

Use this hellebore near entry paths, beneath open-branched trees, in shaded foundation beds, or in containers where you can appreciate the early bloom. The dark red flowers pair beautifully with snowdrops, ferns, heucheras, brunneras, hostas, sedges, and other shade perennials that extend the display after flowering. Several plants together create a rich carpet of evergreen texture and seasonal color without needing bright sun.

Plant Helleborus Winter Sparkle 'Red' in part shade to full shade with fertile, well-drained soil that holds moderate moisture. Morning light or high filtered shade is ideal, while harsh afternoon sun can scorch foliage in warm climates. Work organic matter into sandy or heavy soil, mulch lightly to keep roots cool, and water consistently during the first season. Once established, the plant is durable and usually ignored by deer and rabbits.

Maintenance is simple and best timed around the bloom season. Remove damaged older leaves in late winter so the red flowers show clearly, then let the fresh foliage expand after bloom.
