Helleborus × ericsmithii 'Hgc Champion' (Eric Smith's hellebore) is a compact, evergreen perennial that brings welcome color when little else is blooming. You will see rosy buds open to creamy white flowers (often with a soft pink blush as they mature) from winter into early spring, held above attractive, leathery foliage that stays present year-round in mild to cold climates.
Place it where you can enjoy it up close in the off-season: near an entry, along a path, under deciduous trees, or in a container by a patio. It performs best in part shade, but it can also handle sun in cooler regions when soil moisture is consistent. In hotter climates, give it morning sun and afternoon shade to keep foliage looking its best.
Give this hellebore humus-rich, well-drained soil and steady moisture, especially its first season. Mulch with leaf mold or compost to hold moisture and protect the crown, but keep mulch pulled back from the stems. Once established, it is low maintenance and forms a tidy clump that pairs well with spring bulbs, ferns, and other shade perennials.
For best flowering, cut away tired or weathered leaves in late winter before buds and blooms expand. This refreshes the plant and makes the flowers easier to see. If growing in a pot, use a quality, free-draining mix and water when the top inch of soil dries; avoid letting the container sit in water.
All parts are toxic if eaten, and sap may irritate skin, so wear gloves when pruning and keep it away from curious pets and children.
