Plant in full sun to part shade. In hotter summer areas, afternoon shade helps reduce stress and keeps foliage looking its best. Choose a site with well-drained soil; amend heavy clay with organic matter to improve drainage, and mulch to moderate soil temperature and conserve moisture.

Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry spells. A consistent moisture routine encourages dense growth and reduces stress. Feed lightly in early spring if needed, and avoid excessive nitrogen that can push soft growth.

Prune as little or as much as you like. Light trimming after a flush of growth helps maintain crisp lines for hedges and topiary, while minimal pruning allows its naturally spreading habit to show. Space plants to allow mature width and provide airflow.
