Cheddar Pink 'Firewitch' (Dianthus × 'Firewitch') is a compact, evergreen perennial that forms a tight, low mat of blue-gray foliage and then lights up in spring with vivid magenta-pink, clove-scented flowers.
Plant it where you can enjoy the fragrance: along a path, at the edge of a bed, in a rock garden, or spilling slightly over a wall. Mature plants stay about 3-6 inches tall and spread roughly 18-24 inches wide as the mound slowly broadens.
Give it full sun for the best bloom and foliage color, though it will tolerate part shade (especially in hotter climates). Provide sharply drained soil; raised beds or gritty, well-drained spots help prevent crown problems. Water to establish, then let the soil dry slightly between soakings rather than keeping it constantly wet.
After the main spring flush, shear or deadhead spent flowers to tidy the plant and encourage a later round of bloom. In winter, the foliage remains attractive in many gardens, and a light spring cleanup is usually all it needs.
