Juniperus chinensis 'Gold Star' (Chinese Juniper 'Gold Star') is an evergreen, spreading shrub prized for its bright golden new growth that lights up the garden year-round. Its feathery branch tips glow chartreuse to gold, while older foliage stays blue-green, creating strong contrast and dependable winter color.
Place it where you get the best color: full sun is ideal, though it will also grow in part shade. In lower light it can look looser and less golden. Mature size is typically about 24-36 inches tall, with a broad, low profile that can reach roughly 72-84 inches wide as it fills in, making it useful as a foundation accent, along a driveway edge, or massed on open slopes.
Give it well-drained soil and avoid consistently wet sites. Once established, it handles dry spells well and tolerates a wide range of soil types, including lean or poorer soils. Water regularly during the first growing season to build a deep root system, then water only during extended drought.
Maintenance is simple. Prune lightly in early spring or summer to shape and keep it dense; avoid cutting back into old, bare wood that lacks green growth. Allow good air flow and provide adequate spacing so the plant can spread naturally. With sun, drainage, and modest watering at establishment, this hardy juniper stays clean, colorful, and easy to live with for years.
