Bring year-round structure and spring color to acid-soil gardens with Kalmia latifolia 'Tinkerbell' (Mountain Laurel 'Tinkerbell'). This broadleaf evergreen forms a dense, upright shrub and, in late spring to early summer, produces showy clusters of small, bell-shaped flowers with attractive buds and rich detail.
Place it where you can enjoy the blooms up close: along woodland edges, in foundation plantings, or as an evergreen accent in mixed shrub borders. You will get the best performance with morning sun and early to mid-afternoon shade, though established plants can handle more light if soil moisture stays even and the site is protected from harsh heat.
For easiest care, plant in cool, moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil and keep the root zone mulched with organic material to conserve moisture and moderate temperature swings. Water during dry spells, especially in the first seasons after planting, and avoid siting in heavy, waterlogged clay or exposed windy locations that can dry foliage.
Prune only as needed and do it right after flowering, since next season's flower buds form on older growth. Note: all parts of mountain laurel are considered poisonous if ingested, so site thoughtfully around pets and children.
