If you want bold, vertical color early in the season, Lupinus polyphyllus 'Gallery Pink' is a compact lupine that brings dense spikes of pink blooms above a neat mound of palmate foliage. It is often treated as a short-lived perennial, but it can bloom strongly and look best when you site it carefully.
Plant it where you can give it full sun to part shade and soil that drains well. You will get the most consistent results in cooler summer climates, or in spots with morning sun and some afternoon relief. Avoid heavy, constantly wet ground and improve dense soil with organic matter and drainage before planting.
At maturity, expect a tidy clump about 18-24 inches tall, with flowering spikes rising above the foliage. Water regularly during establishment, then keep moisture even during active growth without leaving the crown soggy. Deadhead spent spikes to keep the plant looking clean and to encourage additional flowering when conditions are favorable.
This lupine works well in borders and cottage-style plantings, and it also makes a strong cut flower. If you garden in warmer, humid regions, treat it as a seasonal feature and plan for peak performance in spring.
