Plant Paeonia × 'Itoh 'First Arrival' where you can enjoy its late-spring display and handsome foliage. As an Itoh (intersectional) peony, it combines sturdy stems and long-lived performance with showy, semi-double pink blooms and a compact, clump-forming habit. You can use it as a specimen, in mixed borders, or as a cut-flower plant.
Give your peony a site with full sun to partial shade. In hot or dry spring climates, you will usually get the best results with some afternoon shade. Choose a fertile, humus-rich soil that holds moisture but drains well, and avoid crowded locations or tight spaces against walls where air movement is poor.
Plant the crown at the correct depth so it can bloom reliably. Keep the buds shallow (generally about 1 inch deep), and do not bury the crown too deeply. Water thoroughly after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist during active growth, especially in spring. Once established, peonies are long-lived and prefer to remain undisturbed for many years.
After flowering, remove spent blooms to keep the plant tidy, then allow foliage to mature through summer to feed next year’s growth. Cut the foliage back in autumn after it dies down. If large blooms become heavy in rain, a discreet support ring can help keep stems upright. Good spacing, sanitation, and airflow also help reduce disease issues such as leaf spots or mildew.
