Pieris japonica 'Purity' is an evergreen shrub valued for long-lasting, pendulous chains of white, urn-shaped flowers in late winter to spring, followed by bronzy new growth that matures to deep green. You can use it as a specimen, in foundation plantings, or along borders where year-round structure matters.
Plant it in moist, well-drained, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. A mulch layer helps keep roots cool and evenly moist, especially through summer heat. Avoid drying winds and harsh winter sun that can scorch foliage and damage flower buds.
Light is best as partial shade, with morning sun or filtered sun; it can take more sun in cooler climates, but protect it from hot afternoon sun in warmer areas. Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells; do not allow the root zone to stay waterlogged.
Prune only as needed, and do it right after flowering so the plant has time to set buds for next season. Because Pieris can be poisonous if ingested, place it where children and pets are less likely to sample the foliage or flowers.
