With Pinus strobus 'Niagara Falls', you can add a dramatic, waterfall-like evergreen form to your landscape in a compact size. This dense selection of eastern white pine develops long, soft blue-green needles and pendulous, cascading branches that drape and flow, especially when allowed to spill over rocks, walls, or a slope.
Place it where you can highlight its unique architecture. You can let it grow naturally as a low, wide, weeping mound, or you can stake and train a leader if you want extra height. Over time, the plant broadens and layers itself with graceful, trailing branchlets for a distinctive sculptural look in every season.
For best results, plant in well-drained soil that stays evenly moist, especially during establishment. It is most comfortable in acidic conditions and does not like wet, poorly drained sites. Once rooted in, keep watering during prolonged dry spells and mulch to help moderate soil moisture and temperature without piling mulch against the trunk.
Give it bright light; it performs best in full sun, and it can handle part shade. Minimal pruning is usually needed, but you can selectively guide the outline, remove any damaged wood, and adjust staking as the plant matures.
