Salvia nemorosa 'Perpetual Purple™' (woodland sage) is made for long-season color in sunny borders. You get dense, upright spikes of rich violet-purple blooms held above aromatic gray-green foliage, creating a neat clump that looks good even between flushes of flowers. Mature size is about 16-18 inches tall with a similar 16-18 inch spread, so it fits easily at the front of beds and along paths.
Plant it in full sun for the most flowers, but it will also perform in part shade, especially where summers are hot. Provide average, well-drained soil; once established it handles periods of dryness, though occasional deep watering during extended drought helps keep blooms coming. Avoid soggy spots and heavy, waterlogged soils.
To keep the show going, shear or deadhead after a main bloom to encourage repeat flowering. If stems get a bit tired later in the season, you can cut the plant back to basal foliage and let it refresh. Leave a little structure going into winter, then cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.
This perennial sage is a strong choice for pollinator plantings. Flowers are visited by butterflies and hummingbirds, and the fragrant foliage tends to be less appealing to deer and rabbits. Use it in cottage gardens, mixed perennial borders, and sunny containers where you want reliable purple color from late spring into fall.
