If you want bold foliage color that lasts from spring through fall, Heuchera 'Red Sea' (Coral Bells 'Red Sea', also sold as Alum Root 'Red Sea') is an easy way to brighten beds and containers. It forms a neat, mounding clump of glossy orange-red to deep red leaves, then sends up slender stems with small white flowers from late spring into summer. Expect a mature size around 12-16 inches tall with a similar spread, making it a strong choice for edging and for repeating color along paths.

Give your plant full sun to part shade; in hotter exposures, a little afternoon shade helps keep leaves looking fresh. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and keep moisture steady while it establishes. Water deeply when the top inch of soil begins to dry, and avoid soggy conditions around the crown, especially in winter.

For best performance, keep the crown at the same level it was growing in the pot and remove spent flower stems as blooms fade. In areas with freeze-thaw cycles, a light winter mulch helps protect the crown, but do not bury it. Every few years, you can lift and replant (or divide if needed) to keep clumps vigorous and tidy.
