Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star' (Singleseed Juniper 'Blue Star') is a dwarf, needled evergreen grown for its dense, low-mounded shape and striking silver-blue foliage that holds color through the seasons. You can use it as a small foundation accent, a rock-garden specimen, or in masses where a compact evergreen texture is needed year-round.
Give it full sun for the best color and a sturdy, tight habit. You will get the easiest long-term results in average soil that drains well. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions better than many shrubs, but it does not like wet, poorly drained sites, especially in winter. Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots settle in, then taper to occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.
At maturity, plan for a plant about 24-36" tall with a spread around 36-48". Space plants with enough room for air flow and their natural width, and keep mulch pulled back from the crown. It pairs well with boulders, gravel paths, and sunny mixed plantings where the blue foliage can contrast with greens, golds, and burgundy tones.
Maintenance is simple: little to no pruning is needed, but you can lightly shape in late winter or early spring if you want to refine the outline. Watch for tip blight, rust issues where apples are nearby, and occasional mites or bagworms. Overall, this is a low-maintenance choice when planted in sun and drainage is kept on the dry side.
