Plant Switch Grass 'Totem Pole' (Panicum 'Prairie Winds® 'Totem Pole') when you want strong vertical structure without a wide footprint. You get a dense, upright clump of blue-green blades topped by airy summer flower panicles, followed by warm yellow to yellow-orange fall color and good winter presence.
For the strongest, most columnar habit, give it full sun, though it will also grow in part shade. Plant in average soil and water regularly until established; after that it handles periodic dry spells but also tolerates medium to moist conditions and can take occasional wet soil. Avoid overly rich soil if you want the tightest, most upright form.
Leave seed heads standing for seasonal interest and to provide wildlife value, then cut the clump back to the ground in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Use it as a specimen, in mass plantings, in native-style designs, or as a narrow screen where you need height and movement.
