Add graceful motion and year-round structure with Panicum virgatum 'Cape Breeze'. This compact switchgrass forms an upright clump of narrow, blue-green blades that stays tidy through the growing season, then finishes with airy, open flower panicles that float above the foliage and catch the light and wind.
Give your plant full sun for the strongest stems and best flowering, though it will also perform in part shade. Plant it in average to moist, well-drained soil, but it adapts to many soil types once established. Space plants so air can move through the clump, and water regularly the first season to help roots settle in.
Maintenance is simple: leave the foliage and seedheads standing for winter interest, then cut the clump back to a few inches tall in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. 'Cape Breeze' pairs beautifully with coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, asters, and other late-season perennials, and it also works well in mixed borders, meadow plantings, and larger containers where you want movement without a tall screen.
