Sedum × 'Night Embers' is a striking, upright autumn stonecrop grown for its moody foliage, strong stems, and late-season flower color. You get thick, semi-glossy, very dark purple leaves and deep-toned stems that keep the plant looking sharp long before bloom time. In late summer into fall, rounded clusters of small starry flowers open in soft mauve-pink shades above the foliage, adding welcome color when many perennials are winding down.
Plant it in full sun for the best color and strongest habit, but it will also tolerate part shade, especially in hotter climates. Give it well-drained soil; gritty or rocky beds are excellent. Once established, it handles drier conditions well, but avoid consistently wet sites where the crown can struggle. This selection typically matures around 24-26 inches tall and about as wide, forming a neat, upright clump that fits easily into mixed plantings and smaller spaces.
Use it to add contrast in borders, rock gardens, gravel gardens, and large containers. The dark foliage looks especially good beside silver, chartreuse, or fine-textured companions. Flower heads are also useful in cut arrangements, and the spent heads can be left in place for winter structure if you like a natural look.
Care is simple: water during extended dry spells the first season, then reduce supplemental watering; avoid heavy fertilizer that can weaken stems; and cut the plant back to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.
