The dwarf cultivar Coreopsis auriculata 'Nana' is a lovely semi-evergreen to evergreen perennial with sunny yellow, daisy-like blooms. With mat-like foliage (6-12 inches tall) consisting of dense, bushy, spreading clumps of short and shiny, oval and broad, deep green leaves (up to 1-3 inches long), Nana's foliage alone tends to make a statement in mass plantings. But if it is blossoms you are after, in late spring to early summer, she will adorn your garden with numerous bright golden-yellow daisy-like flowers (1-2 inches in diameter) with yellow rays that are toothed at the tip. If you live in a warmer climate, you will love watching the foliage turns greenish-bronze for the winter. Nana has a moderate to fast growth rate. This is an absolutely lovely option for someone who wishes to sprinkle their garden with golden blooms, butterflies and birds. Interesting Fact Ariculata means "eared" in reference to ear-like lobes at the base of fuzzy dark-green leaves.
General information about Coreopsis:
With her beautiful sunny flowering blooms, nothing says summer like Coreopsis.
She is excellent for
borders and edging
or used in mass plantings as a bright blanketing groundcover.
In fact, the brilliant
yellow
blooms make lovely cut flowers, so most people find themselves returning for more!
Coreopsis is also a winner because she attracts
butterflies
and her seeds attract
birds
to your garden.
She is known for
spreading
by
stolons,
yet she isn’t invasive.
Easily grown in well drained, average to dry soil, Coreopsis will also tolerate
poor soil,
humidity,
seashore, and even grows on
slopes.
Gardener Tips
If spent flowers are regularly deadheaded, sparse and intermittent repeat blooming may continue throughout the summer and into fall.
In hot, summer climates, plants often stop blooming in mid-summer with a rebloom occurring in fall when temperatures become more moderate.
Plants may be sheared in mid to late summer to tidy their appearance and promote a fall rebloom.
