Juniperus communis 'Compressa' (Pencil Point Juniper 'Compressa') is a dwarf, very narrow common juniper selected for its dense, upright, tapered habit and blue-green, prickly needles. You get a crisp vertical accent that stays compact, with foliage that can take on copper-bronze tones in cooler weather.
Place it where it can receive full sun for best density and color. Provide well-drained soil; it tolerates a wide range of textures, including rocky and lean soils, as long as drainage is good. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, then water during extended dry spells. Once established, it handles drier conditions well.
At maturity, expect roughly 24-72 inches tall and about 12-24 inches wide, with a naturally tight footprint that fits foundation beds, rock gardens, alpine settings, and containers. Its slow growth makes it easy to keep in scale without frequent pruning.
Hardy in USDA Zones 3-6, it is best suited to cooler climates and is often not recommended for areas warmer than Zone 6. In windy winter sites, protect from drying winds and make sure the soil has moisture going into winter to reduce winter burn.
Because it is evergreen and deer resistant, it works well as a small-scale screen, an accent by an entry, or a repeating vertical element in mixed plantings.
