Sometimes foliage can be even more effective than flowers. This is certainly the case with Heuchera americana 'Amethyst Mist', commonly called Coral Bells, which has such decadent, deep wine colored foliage that it often garners more attention than neighboring flowering plants. Blackish maroon to purple leaves have a silvery-blue overlay with extensive black veining. New foliage is deep maroon-purple and all leaves have rich, royal purple undersides.

The foliage has a luxurious wave and shape that appears to have an almost silver fog resting on her surface making Amethyst Mist strikingly unique. In fact, the plant seems to glow with an amethyst mist from a distance, the characteristic for which it is named. This very showy Coral Bells cultivar is a low, clump-forming perennial. Rounded, lobed, long-petioled leaves (2 to 4 inches wide) form a basal mound (up to 9 inches tall).

In late spring to early summer, Amethyst Mist appears as though she's throwing her own fireworks display when tiny, cream-pink, bell-shaped flowers erupt off slender, wiry stems that rise well above the rich foliage mound (typically 18-26 inches tall.) Amethyst Mist not only offers visual beauty, she's a practical option for more northern/cooler climates because she withstands light frost and performs with shorter days and cooler weather making her a wonderful option for cooler climates.

Hands down, Coral Bells is a true must for just about every garden style. The incredibly thick, luxurious foliage is excellent for edging, rock gardens, and facings to buildings and trees. Its wavy foliage makes it a lovely addition to English-cottage style gardens as a singular plant, yet it is equally in a border setting where it adds depth and structure.

In mass, it forms an attractive ground cover, and its presence tends to attract hummingbirds. This species has a slow growth rate and is one of the few groundcovers that can grow under walnut trees. Ideally, plan to give Coral Bells moist, well-drained soil, though she is tolerant of a wide range of soil types. Also, she is moderately tolerant of salt.

If you live in northern climates, Coral Bells will tolerate full sun. One reason Coral Bells is actually highly sought after is due to her preference in the hot summers of southern areas, for part shade, particularly in the afternoon. It is rare to find such a show-stopper for a shade garden.
