Plant Hemerocallis 'Buttered Popcorn' where you want dependable summer color with very little fuss. This daylily forms clumps of arching, grasslike foliage and sends up sturdy scapes topped with buttery yellow blooms. At maturity, expect flower stems about 24-32 inches tall and a clump spread of roughly 12-24 inches, making it easy to tuck into mixed borders, foundation beds, and cottage-style plantings.
Give it full sun for the most flowers, but it will also perform well in part shade, especially where summers are hot. Daylilies adapt to many garden soils as long as drainage is reasonable. Water regularly during establishment, then soak during extended dry spells; once settled, it handles short droughts well and can tolerate some salt exposure in appropriate sites.
For a neat look and longer seasonal interest, remove spent blooms as they fade and cut off finished flower stalks. Divide crowded clumps every few years to refresh vigor and increase bloom. In colder climates, the foliage dies back in fall and returns from the crown in spring; simply trim back old leaves when they yellow or collapse.
Space plants so clumps have room to expand, and combine with summer perennials and ornamental grasses for a long-lasting display. Note: daylilies can be harmful to cats if eaten, so place them accordingly if pets have access to the planting area.
