Sky Pencil holly (Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil') is an exceptionally narrow, upright evergreen that adds strong year-round structure where space is limited. You get a dense column of small, glossy deep green leaves that looks crisp in formal designs and stays slender without constant pruning.
Plant it in full sun to part shade for best density. Give it average moisture in a well-drained soil; it prefers acidic conditions and can struggle in alkaline soils. Work in organic matter to improve drainage and root growth, and water regularly while it establishes, especially in heat or wind.
Once established, keep the root zone evenly moist but not soggy. A 2-3 inch mulch layer helps buffer temperatures and conserve moisture; keep mulch a few inches back from the stems. Prune lightly only if needed to tidy stray shoots, and avoid heavy shearing if you want the natural pencil-like form to remain clean and vertical.
Use Sky Pencil holly as a pair flanking an entry, as a tight hedge, or as a vertical accent in foundation beds and containers. Small spring flowers may be followed by dark fruit on female plants if a compatible male Ilex crenata is nearby for pollination. Provide winter protection from harsh wind in colder areas for the best performance.
