Meserve Holly 'China Girl®' (Ilex × meserveae 'China Girl®') is a broadleaf evergreen holly grown for year-round structure, glossy spiny foliage, and bright berries that add winter interest. This is a female selection, so you will get the best fruit set when you plant a compatible male holly nearby (often another Meserve holly cultivar) that blooms at the same time.
Give your plant full sun to part shade. In warmer-summer locations, a little afternoon shade can help keep foliage looking its best. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and water regularly during establishment; once settled, keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid consistently wet sites, and protect from drying winter winds when possible.
At maturity it can reach about 10-12 feet tall in the landscape, with a dense, shrub-like form that takes pruning well. Use it as a foundation plant, specimen, or clipped hedge. Prune in late winter as needed to shape, and mulch to moderate soil moisture and temperature. If you see yellowing leaves, it can be a sign the soil is too alkaline.
