Plant Rose of Sharon 'Dark Lavender Chiffon®' (Hibiscus syriacus 'Dark Lavender Chiffon®') when you want a tall, late-season flowering shrub with an elegant, ruffled look. Its double, lavender-toned blooms open through the heat of summer when many shrubs are finished, adding color and texture without demanding constant attention.
Give it full sun for the heaviest bloom, though it will also grow in part shade. Mature size is about 8-12 ft tall and roughly 6-10 ft wide, so leave room for air flow and future branching. It is deciduous, so it will drop its leaves in fall and leaf out later than some shrubs in spring.
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly the first season to establish roots. After establishment, it tolerates short dry spells, but consistent moisture during prolonged heat supports better flowering. Mulch over the root zone to moderate soil temperature and reduce evaporation, keeping mulch a few inches back from the stems.
Because it blooms on new wood, you can prune in late winter or early spring to shape and to encourage strong new growth for summer flowers. Use it as a specimen, a flowering screen, or in a mixed shrub border, and expect pollinators to visit the blooms during the peak of the season.
