Rhododendron × 'Pjm Elite' is a cold-hardy, broadleaf evergreen shrub valued for its spring flower clusters and dependable year-round structure. In early to mid-spring, you get showy trusses in lavender to lavender-pink tones, followed by dense, dark green foliage that can take on deeper purplish tones in winter.
Plant it where you can give it bright, filtered light or morning sun with afternoon shade. Part shade helps protect the foliage from scorch and reduces winter stress in exposed sites. A spot sheltered from strong winter winds can improve performance and reduce leaf burn.
For best results, grow it in acidic, organically rich soil that stays evenly moist but drains well. Work in leaf mold or fine bark, and mulch to keep roots cool and moisture consistent, keeping mulch off the stem. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as rhododendrons dislike wet feet and may decline in poorly drained soil.
At maturity, expect a size around 48-60 inches tall with a spread about 36-48 inches. Use it as a foundation evergreen, a woodland-edge accent, or a small hedge. If you prune, do it right after flowering so you do not remove next year's buds. Provide steady moisture during establishment, then keep watering during dry spells.
