Yaku Princess Rhododendron 'Princess' (Rhododendron yak. 'Princess') is a compact broadleaf evergreen that brings classic rhododendron color to smaller spaces. You get a dense, rounded mound of glossy foliage with attractive spring clusters: dark pink buds open to soft pink and then age toward creamy white. The shrub stays neat and low, making it a natural fit for foundations, mixed borders, woodland edges, and sheltered courtyard plantings.
Give it rich, acidic soil that drains well yet stays evenly moist. If your native soil is heavy or alkaline, plant in an amended berm or raised area with plenty of organic matter. Mulch with pine bark or pine needles to moderate soil temperature, conserve moisture, and protect shallow roots. Water deeply during dry spells, especially in the first few seasons and during bud set for next year's flowers.
Light is important for long-term success. You will get the best performance with partial shade or dappled light, with protection from hot afternoon sun in warmer regions. Place it out of drying winter winds, and avoid low spots where cold air collects. Keep the root zone cool and consistently moist, but do not allow waterlogged conditions that can lead to root problems.
Minimal pruning is needed. If you do prune, do it right after flowering by removing spent trusses and lightly shaping as needed. Fertilize lightly with an acid-forming fertilizer for rhododendrons if your soil is low in organic matter, and avoid overfeeding. As with many rhododendrons, plant parts are considered toxic if ingested, so site accordingly in gardens with curious pets or children.
