Plant Viburnum dentatum 'Red Feather®' where you want a tough, wildlife-friendly shrub with season-long interest. In spring, it produces flat clusters of small white flowers, followed by blue-black fruit. The standout feature is its foliage: new growth often emerges maroon and matures to deep green, then finishes the season with red to purplish-red fall color.
Give it full sun to part shade for the strongest growth and best leaf color. It adapts to many soils, but you will get the healthiest plant in moderately fertile, moisture-retentive soil that drains well. Once established it can handle short dry spells, but consistent moisture during the first couple of growing seasons helps it root in and perform reliably.
Plan for a large, rounded shrub about 8-10 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide. Use it as a screen, hedge, or backbone plant in mixed borders. Space plants so air can move through the canopy, and mulch to keep roots cool and reduce watering needs. Water deeply during hot, dry periods, especially on sandy sites or in full sun exposures.
Prune after flowering if you need to shape or reduce size, since flower buds form on old wood. Remove a few of the oldest stems at the base over time to renew the plant and keep it vigorous. This selection is generally low maintenance once established and rewards you with flowers, fruit, and strong fall color.
