If you want classic spring snowballs on a tough, adaptable shrub, Viburnum opulus 'Roseum' delivers. Also sold as European Snowball Bush 'Roseum', it forms a large, rounded deciduous plant and puts on a memorable display of dense, ball-shaped flower clusters that open greenish and mature to bright white, sometimes aging to a soft blush.
Give it full sun to part shade for the strongest bloom show. In most gardens, this plant matures to roughly 10-12 feet tall with a similar spread, so site it where it can grow naturally without constant shearing. It works well as a specimen, in a mixed shrub border, or as a loose screen where spring flowers can take center stage.
Plant in average, moderately fertile soil that holds some moisture yet drains well. Water regularly through establishment, then keep an eye on moisture during extended dry spells, especially on sandy sites. A 2-3 inch mulch ring helps moderate soil temperature and conserve water; keep mulch a few inches back from the stems. After flowering, you can lightly thin or shape as needed, removing the oldest stems at the base to maintain a healthy, open structure over time.
