Phlox paniculata 'Jeana' (garden phlox) is a classic summer perennial for adding height and fragrance to mixed borders. You get upright stems topped with generous clusters of five-petaled blooms that open over a long midsummer-to-early-fall season, bringing reliable color when many perennials are starting to fade.
Plant it where you can enjoy the scent and the steady pollinator activity. Garden phlox is well known for drawing butterflies, and it performs best with plenty of light; full sun is ideal, but it will also grow well in part shade, especially where summers are hot.
At maturity, expect a clump about 24-48 inches tall and roughly 24-36 inches wide. Give it enough room for air movement and pair it with neighbors that will not crowd the stems. In borders, this size makes it easy to tuck behind shorter plants while still reading clearly from a distance.
For best performance, choose moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Water during dry spells so the root zone stays evenly moist, and mulch to keep soil temperature steady. Avoid wetting the foliage late in the day when you irrigate.
Deadhead spent clusters to keep the planting tidy and encourage continued bloom. If the clump becomes dense over time, divide in spring or after flowering to refresh vigor and maintain good spacing.
